Care Instructions for your Leather Furniture
Leather furniture is equally wonderful in your home or office and adds warmth and character to the surrounding space. You can enjoy your leather furniture for years depending on the leather grade and the care you give it.
Following are care instructions that should be adhered to in order to maintain the sheen of your leather chair and extend the life of your furniture.
1. It is highly recommended that you distance your furniture from heating sources. A distance of at least 1-foot should be maintained because close contact with heat will dry out your leather making it more prone to chipping and cracking.
2. It is also advised to try and keep your furniture out of direct exposure to sunlight. We all know that materials exposed to sunlight fade at a faster rate than when protected as much as possible. This is mostly the case with Deluxe Grade Leather that have been treated with aniline oil since they are extremely sensitive to direct sunlight.
3. Regular dusting of your leather furniture should be sufficient to maintain them in great condition.
4. Occassionally use a soft, damp cloth for a deeper clean and maintenance. Pay particular attention to the areas used most including headrests and armrests.
5. In cases where the leather becomes soiled with oil, alcohol like beer or wine, and coffee you should use a soft sponge or chamois cloth and lukewarm water with mild soap, or dishwashing detergent.
6. Rub very lightly in circular movements and once the dirt/stain has been released use a dry cloth to wipe clean.
7. Use water-based cleaners when cleaning your leather as oil-based ones stretch the leather at the seams and cause color changes in the leather.
8. For ballpoint penmarks you can use a soft eraser. However, because ballpoint ink contains some aniline this means that it might be very difficult to remove, so if the eraser does not do the trick then it is recommended that you contact a leather professional for advice on how to proceed.
9. Minor scrathces can be rubbed with a finger and that should buff them away.
10. For deeper scratches you can use a hair dryer and blow warm air to the surface of the leather from a distance of about 15 – 20 inches. This should remove the scratch from the leather.
11. Substances that should never be used on our grades of leather are shoe polish, oil, mink oil, waxes, silicone, vinegar, lemon, saddle soap (extremely harsh for leather) and any other hazardous housecleaning products. Make sure you also steer away from baby wipes that will ensure the destruction of the leather finish.
12. A good leather conditioner should be used every few months. Ensure you always test the product of your choice on an inconspicuous spot so that you are certain it won’t damage the leather.
Leather is a truly stunning material that can offer a sense of luxury to your home and should be treated with care. Proper cleaning and conditioning will ensure a long lifespan of your leather furniture for many years of enjoyment and satisfaction.
